Revival of the Wrap Set

History

The second design Diane ever put into production is back for a limited edition revival. In 1973, Diane created a cotton jersey wrap set consisting of a wrap top with cuffed sleeves and a statement-making collar, a pair of flared pants, and a winding, kelly green, tile mosaic print she drew by hand. Easy to mix and match, oh-so-soft against the skin, and timelessly chic.

When it hit the scene, Diana Vreeland, editor-in-chief of Vogue, lauded her praises for Diane's originality and relevance in designing the set. She had Bob Stone photograph supermodel Cheryl Tiegs and featured it in a 1974 issue of the magazine. Soon after, this chic wrap set became the iconic wrap dress—and the rest is history.

While the pieces are sold individually, we think getting the whole set is the way to go since it's perfect for work, parties, and, of course, dancing. The set is not only adaptable for many environments, but it opens your wardrobe up to endless styling possibilities.

Alone, a wrap top is inherently feminine, but the Bobbie has a polo collar and rolled cuffs, giving it a distinctly edgy feel suitable for all sorts of aesthetics. The Finn pants are more forward in their style—a flared leg will always feel retro—we recommend balancing them out with a basic tee or oversized sweater for a unique look that requires minimal effort.

While looking through the DVF archives, Talita selected this set for a limited revival. All of its original design details (the bold print, cuffed sleeves, and flared pants) remain untouched, but one detail has been updated to reflect DVF’s journey. Instead of being made out of cotton jersey, the Originals set features silk-cotton jersey, a signature DVF fabric. Just as modern, versatile, and fitting for the woman on-the-go today as it was in the 70s.

“If I see you that way, with love, I must let your grief into my heart, your story into my heart, I must stand up for you when you’re in harm’s way. What happens when we see George Floyd as our brother, or Breonna as a sister, migrant children as our own sons and daughters—what would we risk?”

This idea of summoning ancestors is more accessible than one would think. Valarie channels the energy of her grandfather, a biological ancestor, but she also sits at the feet of Black thinkers like Dr. King, James Baldwin, Audre Lorde, and bell hooks.

“As soon as we put people up on pedestals and make them into saints, we sap them of all their power. It’s so easy to say ‘Well, they were saints. They were superhuman. That means I don’t have to try and be like them.’ What does it mean to see them in their messiness and faults? We can begin to acknowledge our own vulnerabilities and faults and say ‘I too am worthy enough to be able to show up and live a life dedicated to love.’”
